For the Paris 2024 Olympics, I once again assisted The Pick and Roll with their social graphic suite to cover the event. With teams competing across men’s, women’s 3x3, and wheelchair basketball, we needed a unique range of templates that stood out in social feeds alongside other basketball coverage happening at the same time. The theme had to work for warm-up events, pool games, and medal rounds, while also being adaptable for live YouTube broadcasts and podcasts immediately after games for the main national teams.
I approached the project with the goal of blending The Pick and Roll's main visual identity with a style that reflected the Paris Olympics. This included using shapes familiar to basketball fans, such as the key court element as a framing device. I selected Oskar Inline as the hero font for the event; its circular forms and straight lines mirrored the geometry of a basketball court, while its early-20th-century engraved metal style evoked the medals we hoped the teams would win.
The flexible yet consistent base templates allowed for quick story graphics around breaking team news. Game results and player-of-the-game templates enabled immediate text updates, allowing the team to publish results within seconds of the game finishing. Special medal-round colouring was also considered during the initial design, and it was exciting to use these variations for the Opals during their bronze medal win.
Overall, this approach to the graphic suite helped The Pick and Roll maintain their well-deserved reputation as one of the top sources for Aussie basketball coverage.
